Anymd
sylphx · MCP server
Anymd is an MCP server and command line tool that turns files into Markdown for AI agents. It reads PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, EPUB, HTML and web pages, runs OCR on images, and returns metadata, subtitles and transcripts for audio and video. Four tools outline a document's headings, read it with page ranges and a token budget, search across files, folders and URLs, and inspect PDFs. OCR uses installed tesseract or an opt-in model, audio and video use installed ffmpeg, and speech models need an opt-in download. It was formerly called pdf-reader-mcp.

Why it's useful
Your agent can read the files you already have, in many formats, from one place, without you converting or pasting them first.
What you could do with it
- Have your agent read pages 1 to 5 of a PDF as Markdown, within a token budget you set.
- Search a folder of mixed documents for a phrase and get one line per match.
- Pull a transcript from an audio or video file once you have opted in to the speech model download.
Written from its documentation: what it says it can do, not what our checks found.
Maintenance
Not measuredNo release date is on record for this package yet. The nightly publisher check records one as it reaches each npm package, about once every ten nights.
Release activity only: it says nothing about quality or safety, and a finished small package can be fine without releases. How it is measured
- Command execution is bounded
- inventory
- node child_process (bin/anymd.js:10)
- synchronous shell execution (bin/anymd.js:52)
- An inventory of where the code starts another program, not a verdict on this row: whether each one runs a fixed program or whatever it is handed takes a reading by hand.
Published because it was found. A finding is information about where the limits are, not a verdict that the software is unsafe.
What this does not cover
- Everything. Treat it as you would software from anywhere else.
Receipt history: every signed receipt for every version of this listing, and what changed between them.
In its maker's words
Any file → clean Markdown for AI agents: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, EPUB, HTML and web pages, images (OCR), audio and video (metadata, subtitles, transcripts). A fast Rust MCP server and CLI that runs on your machine. No API key.

Static scanned
- What it establishes
- Its published package, or for a hosted server its source repository at a recorded commit, was read file by file, without running it, by every check in our current scan.
- What it does not
- How it behaves when it runs, or anything the scan does not read yet: several rubric checks, the repository's history, and compiled code in folders named dist or build. For a hosted server, that the endpoint runs the code that was read. The ooruby Index sets out exactly what was read.
- Exactly what was read
- Version 8.5.2, the file with digest sha512-kZIy2QwFtwX1UTzlkbAK/s05P+fmMUlZs2x0LPJS9pmGRFP57oQO/yr5JnY31km3EW6GU1ZaEw7d5w73EgkOfw==, as the registry publishes it. A published version cannot be replaced, so this names the same bytes for anyone who checks.
- Authentication
- Runs locally. No hosted endpoint is listed for this package. You run it on your own machine, so there is no endpoint of ours to authenticate against.
