Universal System Map, or USM, is a shared description of a software system that people and AI agents maintain together. Your agent drafts a spec for a feature before it writes code, you review the generated documentation, and the agent then builds from the spec, which stays on as documentation. A command line tool and an MCP server with 18 tools let agents list, search, query, validate and write the system, its services and its features. It suits teams working with AI coding agents who want intent written down first.

Why it's useful
Intent gets reviewed as a written spec instead of being lost in chat, and the next agent session can read it for context.
What you could do with it
- Ask your agent to draft a feature spec, review the generated Markdown, then let it build from the approved spec.
- Generate Mermaid diagrams, OpenAPI specs and Vitest test specs from the same set of spec files.
- Bring an existing Structurizr model into the map, then have your agent search and query it.
Written from its documentation: what it says it can do, not what our checks found.
Maintenance
Not measuredNo release date is on record for this package yet. The nightly publisher check records one as it reaches each npm package, about once every ten nights.
Release activity only: it says nothing about quality or safety, and a finished small package can be fine without releases. How it is measured
What this does not cover
- Everything. Treat it as you would software from anywhere else.
Receipt history: every signed receipt for every version of this listing, and what changed between them.
In its maker's words
Universal System Map — structured source of truth for agentic systems. CLI + MCP server + JSON Schema + generators (markdown, Mermaid, OpenAPI, ArchiMate, TOGAF).

Static scanned
- What it establishes
- Its published package, or for a hosted server its source repository at a recorded commit, was read file by file, without running it, by every check in our current scan.
- What it does not
- How it behaves when it runs, or anything the scan does not read yet: several rubric checks, the repository's history, and compiled code in folders named dist or build. For a hosted server, that the endpoint runs the code that was read. The ooruby Index sets out exactly what was read.
- Exactly what was read
- Version 0.10.3, the file with digest sha512-P/laWx12JW0XSA1i79A9FJaqfIZ86DlXdjJ1ffWLAi8+TozGAO3XiMlhPhVq9y60VlRA0Dn/q8f1ApZSGcQaKw==, as the registry publishes it. A published version cannot be replaced, so this names the same bytes for anyone who checks.
- Authentication
- Runs locally. No hosted endpoint is listed for this package. You run it on your own machine, so there is no endpoint of ours to authenticate against.
