Pi Research

lincoln504 · Agent

Pi Research is web research for agents, available as a Pi extension, an agent skill and an SDK. A coordinator plans each round, researcher agents scrape and read pages in parallel, and a research lead writes the final report from what was collected, at one of three depth levels: normal, deep or ultra. The research agent is read-only, so it cannot run shell commands or write, edit or delete anything. It needs a model with a 100k+ context window and a residential IP address, as cloud and VPS addresses get bot-blocked. The only cost is the model tokens.

Written by ooruby from the README of @lincoln504/pi-research 1.7.10.

Why it's useful

Your agent can search and read the web without a search provider, and keep what it finds for later runs.

What you could do with it

  1. 1Describe what you need in plain language and get one cited report, with the depth level picked for you.
  2. 2Save findings to a searchable knowledge store, global or per project, so later runs start from them.
  3. 3Build agent systems that find and read web content, or collect a dataset of web sources.

Written from its documentation: what it says it can do, not what our checks found.

Maintenance

Not measured

No release date is on record for this package yet. The nightly publisher check records one as it reaches each npm package, about once every ten nights.

Release activity only: it says nothing about quality or safety, and a finished small package can be fine without releases. How it is measured

Not yet tested
Command execution is bounded
inventory
node child_process (src/cli.ts:28)
synchronous shell execution (src/cli.ts:1045)
dynamic Function constructor (src/youtube/potoken.ts:242)
node child_process (src/knowledge/webgpu-viability.ts:19)
An inventory of where the code starts another program, not a verdict on this row: whether each one runs a fixed program or whatever it is handed takes a reading by hand.

Published because it was found. A finding is information about where the limits are, not a verdict that the software is unsafe.

How far this has been checked

Static scanned

What it establishes
Its published package, or for a hosted server its source repository at a recorded commit, was read file by file, without running it, by every check in our current scan.
What it does not
How it behaves when it runs, or anything the scan does not read yet: several rubric checks, the repository's history, and compiled code in folders named dist or build. For a hosted server, that the endpoint runs the code that was read. The ooruby Index sets out exactly what was read.
Exactly what was read
Version 1.7.10, the file with digest sha512-zfIx9TlS9cgGm8vBnIK8Pzs8+u24ZFb7I4gPwgKq0l+bcm5fKwwHvXFD4u7AIaCdEQibEtohrICjtyPhpCgymg==, as the registry publishes it. A published version cannot be replaced, so this names the same bytes for anyone who checks.
Authentication
Runs locally. No hosted endpoint is listed for this package. You run it on your own machine, so there is no endpoint of ours to authenticate against.
How the rungs work

Adding it

Run it with:

npx -y @lincoln504/pi-research@1.7.10

Pinned to 1.7.10, which is the version the findings above were found in. Drop the version to take whatever is newest, and the report on this page stops describing what you installed.

Search works through Exa without an API key by default, but video questions need a Gemini API key or opt-in browser cookies, and frames need ffmpeg, plus yt-dlp for YouTube. The tools can also run as a local MCP server for other agents.
