Flare Redact

umudhasanli · Agent

flare-redact is a library with no dependencies that finds secrets and personal data in logs, text and prompts and masks them, keeping a hint so the output stays debuggable. Wrap an OpenAI or Anthropic client and detected values are replaced with placeholders before the prompt is sent, then restored in the reply. Its FlareFlow part sets rules for which agent tools and argument paths may receive a protected value, such as a database credential that may be used only once. Detection can miss things, so a clean scan is not proof of no personal data.

Written by ooruby from the README of flare-redact 1.6.1.

Why it's useful

Secrets and personal data often slip into logs and prompts inside an object nobody inspected; this masks them before they leave your code.

What you could do with it

  1. 1Wrap your logging so an AWS key pasted into a free-text note is masked before it reaches your log aggregator.
  2. 2Wrap your OpenAI or Anthropic client so the model gets placeholders for customer emails and card numbers.
  3. 3Limit a database credential to one agent tool and one argument path, and allow it only once.

Written from its documentation: what it says it can do, not what our checks found.

Maintenance

Not measured

No release date is on record for this package yet. The nightly publisher check records one as it reaches each npm package, about once every ten nights.

Release activity only: it says nothing about quality or safety, and a finished small package can be fine without releases. How it is measured

Not yet tested

What this does not cover

  • ·Everything. Treat it as you would software from anywhere else.

Corrected after a reading by hand on 2026-10-10

  • No shipped credentials: the automated note “The scan matched 12 credential-shaped strings in the published files. Location withheld pending disclosure to the maker.” was withdrawn. Conformance cases and README examples for a redaction library: AWS's documented example key and made-up tokens it is tested against, and a key block sample far too short to be a key.

In its maker's words

Zero-dependency secret and PII redaction for logs, prompts, and agent tools — with FlareFlow information-flow control and a polyglot sidecar.

How far this has been checked

Static scanned

What it establishes
Its published package, or for a hosted server its source repository at a recorded commit, was read file by file, without running it, by every check in our current scan.
What it does not
How it behaves when it runs, or anything the scan does not read yet: several rubric checks, the repository's history, and compiled code in folders named dist or build. For a hosted server, that the endpoint runs the code that was read. The ooruby Index sets out exactly what was read.
Exactly what was read
Version 1.6.1, the file with digest sha512-13Htu6VPk2ttxcoVOP909pXao6orrIBAMS/qWdhQn3/BS5AxSB5fpyqaPZnRGJhfBAM2M9T+RE662hxEpv6nGQ==, as the registry publishes it. A published version cannot be replaced, so this names the same bytes for anyone who checks.
Authentication
Runs locally. No hosted endpoint is listed for this package. You run it on your own machine, so there is no endpoint of ours to authenticate against.
How the rungs work

Adding it

Run it with:

npx -y -p flare-redact@1.6.1 flare-redact

Pinned to 1.6.1, which is the version the findings above were found in. Drop the version to take whatever is newest, and the report on this page stops describing what you installed.
