MCP server

A program that exposes tools and data to a model through the Model Context Protocol.

An MCP server sits between a model and something the model cannot reach on its own: a database, a filesystem, an API, a calendar. It publishes a list of tools with descriptions, and the model reads those descriptions to decide what to call.

Servers run either locally on the machine using them or remotely over the network. The distinction matters for what an attacker can reach if the server is compromised.

Why it matters

It is one of the two things sold on this site, and it is the one where a bad listing has the widest blast radius, because servers hold credentials.

The mistake everyone makes

Assuming the tool descriptions a server publishes are fixed. They are data the server controls, they can change on an update, and a model reads them as instructions.
